The enormous bay sits roughly 90 miles south of Cancun making it a convenient destination for any traveling angler. And due to strict regulations placed on commercial fishing the bay has been able to sustain the numbers of anglers while also retaining healthy numbers of fish. He’s caught over 325 fish species in over 50 countries on the fly but blue marlin was always one that escaped him. Even as we write this article the sun is beginning to set noticeably earlier each day. The mornings, even though still warm, are slowly starting to take on the distant hints of fall. Sunshine breaks the late summer dawn with the crimson glows that suggest elk hunting is right around the corner. Clothes that have been stowed away since last bird season are being unpacked and dogs are starting to excite with the not too far-off retrieves. Fall also means fly fishing during, arguably, the best time of the year. As summer crowds return to careers and lives off the water, rivers are offered a bit of respite from the high-season traffic. And for anglers, the possibility of world-class rivers to themselves is enough to get anyone out of bed on a cold autumn morning.
