Yellow Dog Holiday Gift Guide

Posted by yellowdog on Dec 7, 2017 12:00:00 AM

The holidays are just around the corner, and that means picking out gifts for friends and family. If you need to find something for that serious angler in your life, then we've got some great ideas for this season. The Yellow Dog staff has done the field testing and have put these pieces of gear through the ringer time and time again. At the end of the day, we think these are the items that will have every angler smiling ear-to-ear when they unwrap them.

Hatch Nomad Pliers

These pliers are the all purpose utility tool for every angler. Made out of the highest quality aluminum and Tungsten Carbide, they’ll get the job done in any situation. They’re made to resist the most abrasive saltwater corrosion - don't be surprised when you find yourself handing these down to your grandchildren.

"They're not too big, and not too small. And they do everything pliers should - pinch, cut, tighten, and open beverages." - Jake Wells

Hatch 7 Plus Gen 2 Reel

If you're looking for a reel that covers all your bases, the Hatch 7 Plus is the one you want. Great on the salt and performs well for the big freshwater species. Steelhead, carp, permit or bonefish - it's a great all-around reel that any angler would be excited to see on their rod.

"Hatch reels have evolved with Yellow Dog for the past decade. We have grown together, and both improved our products over the years. I'm proud to fish Hatch reels and they've held the test of time. What I'm most proud of is that Hatch actually listens to our constructive criticisms. Too many tackle companies pretend to listen but never change anything. Hatch is the finest reel because they offer the most durable reel on the market today. They've recently overhauled the drag system to perform even better under high heat, which is important when slugging it out with GTs, billfish, and tarpon. They also lightened the Finatics and reworked the drag knob seal so that it can fend off salt build up. I've dropped my reels, battled many memorable fish on light tippets, and not really taken good care of them, yet they've never failed me over the past twelve years! The new colors now even look better in your fishing pictures!" - Ian Davis

Simms Dry Creek Z Backpack

Don’t leave home without this bomb proof backpack. The fully waterproof bag made from durable synthetic material will hold up in the toughest conditions. Whether you’re standing on a flat in the Seychelles or bushwacking through the Patagonia wilderness, this backpack will provide everything you need.

"My backpack's full of flies, leaders, food, water - everything I need for the day. When you're on the flats the entire day, you have to bring it all. I've had it for more than three years. It's the most bulletproof backpack there is!" - Camille Egdorf

Costa Sunglasses

Every angler needs a good durable pair of polarized sunglasses. Taking shots at permit on the flats or lacing casts below willows to a big sipping brown, Costa's will quickly become your best friend.

"Many anglers believe that polarized sunglasses are only for bright, sunny days. Polarized lenses are imperative for all light and overhead cloud conditions. Lenses with a yellow base are ideal for overcast days or the tail-end of a day on the water as the light begins to fade. Yellow Dog recommends that all anglers carry lenses for all light conditions and I will have a pair of low light specific lenses in addition to a darker pair of lenses in my boat bag or pack at all times. I frequently reach for the Sunrise Silver Mirror on rainy days here in Montana, and they were a staple for early morning jet boat runs in Alaska. Deteriorating weather conditions can lead to great fishing; make sure to protect your eyes while enhancing your ability to spot fish." - Grey York

Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody

Weather can move in at any moment, especially in the mountains. Don't let a little rain or cold ruin your day on the water. The Nano Puff packs down small to fit into any pack and provides warmth and durability in the harshest of climates.

"When traveling, the one piece of gear I always bring with is my Nano Puff. Through the years it's put on some miles, and now my jacket garners duct tape to patch the holes accrued from hundreds of adventures - but in my mind, they're hard earned badges, and I wear them with pride. It's been there catching big fish in Patagonia, rock climbing across Spain, skiing the Rocky Mountain backcountry, and stalking bull elk in the deep snow. Most recently, it's been witnessing my pathetic attempts at becoming an upland bird hunter. I don't plan on parting with it anytime soon - I just may need some more duct tape." - Dillon Gruber

Thomas & Thomas Exocett Fly Rod

Yellow Dog has fished these rods across the world. We like them for their amazing ability to slice through wind on the most blustery of flats and can withstand the biggest of fish. In fact, we like them so much we give them to clients to use on trips if they're lacking equipment.

"I have been lucky enough to fish, explore, and guide in some far out places. But as amazing as all these places are, with regards to the fishing, they've never been there for humans to inhabit. You have extreme heat with ultra high humidity. In the Seychelles, you have one of the highest salt content in the water than any other place on the planet, and you're fishing for some of the most bad-ass fish in the ocean. We're fishing for species that will definitely test your equipment to the maximum in the most extreme environments. This is why you need to be confident that your equipment is the best there is, and that it won't fail once you've hooked onto one of these monster fish. Considering also that you're in the most extreme, remote locations where it isn't really possible to simply get a new rod, you have to have the best. This is the reason why I use the T&T Exocett rods because they have set the benchmark from a very early stage in rod development. The Exocett also uses the best materials and components, and every part of the rod is hand-made in the USA. Thomas and Thomas help me tame the beast in these remote locations and gives me the confidence to do so!" - Jako Lucas

Yellow Dog Hat

Every serious angler should have a Yellow Dog hat. It's casual but at the same time screams you mean business - some have even gone as far to say that it leads to catching more fish. (But then again, we're a little biased.)
