TAKE THE FAMILY TO THE BAHAMAS
Paging through the 2017 Guide to Angling Travel, you may noticed we included a section with our favorite family-friendly destinations. We realize how hard it can be for many anglers to balance their fishing addictions and desires with the vacation demands of a family, kids or non-angling spouse. If you’re trying to plan an adventure that will please everyone involved, then we’re here to help.
Here at Yellow Dog, we actually rank and rate each of our destinations based on exactly how “family-friendly” they are, taking into consideration such factors as the availability of non-angling activities, specific programs and services for non-anglers, separate non-angler rates, and more. We combine all of this information with the realities of exactly how good and how diverse the fishing is as well. In the end, we’re able to offer a number of lodge and destination options that can easily cater to a mixed angling / non-angling couple, while at the same time offering a great overall fishing experience.
For more information and details on each of these operations, explore our full list of family-friendly destinations here — you’ll find full details, dozens of photos, complete rates, and more.
Over the next few weeks we’ll be featuring our favorite family-friendly destinations in a series of posts. We’re kicking it off with the Bahamas:
Pelican Bay Resort (Grand Bahama, Bahamas)
World-class bonefishing with all of the comforts and amenities of a high-end luxury beach resort. This private waterfront resort sits adjacent to both the white sands of Lucaya beach and Count Bassie Square, offering a wide selection of restaurants, bars, duty free shopping, dancing, a casino, golf, tennis, water sports, and evening entertainment. This is a large-scale operation that can easily be compared to the large resorts of Hawaii or Mexico, but with much better fishing! The guides are fun to fish with, educationally focused and know BIG bones, which Grand Bahama is well known for!
Deep Water Cay Club (Grand Bahama, Bahamas)
This formerly private club is now open to the public, and the new owners just invested 10 million dollars into the amenities of the club. Deep Water Cay is situated on a private island and is surrounded by pristine and very productive flats. The infinity pool, dining area, accommodations, bar, dining area, beach and staff are all top notch. A fleet of 10 new Hells Bay flats skiffs and an excellent guide staff make this is a wonderful family destination with lots to do besides fishing!
Abaco Club at Winding Bay (Abaco Island, Bahamas)
For those seeking an upscale beach vacation for families and couples that also offers an abundance of activities and fishing opportunities, this large-scale resort is perfect. Whether you are golfing on the #1 rated golf course in the Bahamas, sea kayaking or snorkeling in the bay, or walking the two miles of white sandy beach, you will feel totally relaxed and well-taken care of at Abaco Club. Yellow Dog will organize day trips with local outfitters to fish the productive flats or blue water around Abaco Island. We also offer combination packages with any of the other fine fishing lodges on Abaco, so you can do a few days at another lodge and then relax at the Abaco Club. The possibilities are endless at Abaco Club!
Swain’s Cay Lodge (Andros Island, Bahamas)
This is a strong value for a honeymooning couple seeking a beach experience in the Bahamas. Opened in 2012, the facility is well-maintained, clean and comfortable. It is on a white sandy beach that overlooks a bonefish flat, small island, and reef, so you can fish or kayak right from the quaint lodge! The fishing and eco-guides will show you the middle and south bights of Andros, which is a beautiful inland flats and lagoon system teaming with fish and wildlife. The meals are well prepared and the staff is lots of fun. The guides are true professionals, and are fine instructors!
Tiamo Resort (Andros Island, Bahamas)
Located in Andros's South Bight this upscale eco-resort has just been renovated. The new owners have added A/C to two of the three style accommodations (Pool and Cool Cottages), a freshwater pool, new decks, internet access, digital TV in the library, and a brand new offshore fishing boat for fishing. The key to this destination is the location, which is around 8 miles inland from the east coast of Andros in the South Bight. This is prime habitat for big bones and there are few other operations fishing these waters. The run to the famous West Side of Andros is only 25 minutes! The West Side is well known for monster bones, and occasional permit and tarpon. The beach is spectacular and there are numerous inclusive non-angling activities, such as kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, daily picnics, and eco walks.
Kamalame Cay Resort (Andros Island, Bahamas)
One of the nicest lodge / resort options in the entire world of saltwater fly fishing, Kamalame is a bit on the expensive side compared to many fly fishing-focused lodges, but very, very nice. Located on a private island on the north end of Andros, Kamalame features great private accommodations options (houses and bungalows located directly on the beach) and the nicest beaches on the island. The spa offers guests a wide range of treatments, that are very soothing after a long day of fishing, relaxing by the fresh water pool, or a session on the tennis court. You also have a huge system of home flats, meaning you can easily fish on your own on your non-guided days. For guided days, you have access to both the West Side and the Joulter Cays; two of the most incredible fisheries on Andros.
Stella Maris Resort (Long Island, Bahamas)
This beautiful ocean-front resort offers a wide range of tropical vacation accommodations, superb beaches, and numerous water activities. Three hotel pools dot the manicured grounds, as do seven hidden beach coves, all nestled into a splendid panorama of tropical foliage and dramatic shorelines. Long Island is peaceful, uncrowded, and hardly touched by modern tourism. The cool thing for the angler is their outfitter – James “Docky” Smith. Docky is one of the best guides in the Bahamas, and he loves to focus bonefish and permit. This is another more reasonable option in the Bahamas for couples seeking a Caribbean beach and water sports honeymoon.
